Program Description

The Technician Certificate Foundation Program is designed to help trainees meet and complete the language and math requirements of the Technician Certificate Program of choice. The Technician Certificate Program integrates English language and mathematics training simultaneously with technical courses to further develop students’ literacy and numeracy skills.

One to Four Semesters

Accreditation

The Foundation English Language Program at UDST is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for the period August 2016 through August 2026 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. Admission Requirements

1. High school graduation certificate, with an overall average of 50% or higher.

1. Minimum required score or higher on the UDST English Placement Test.

1. Completion of the UDST Math Placement Test.

1. Sponsored by an oil and gas industry partner.

Program Objectives

Dependent on individual student need, during the Technician Certificate Foundation Program (TCFP) students should be able to:

PO01. Listen and respond to monologues or dialogues up to four (4) minutes long, about a less familiar topic

PO02. Read texts written in a variety of formats about less familiar topics up to 500 words

PO03. Give a four-minute presentation on a factual or less familiar topics

PO04. Write a cause and effect paragraph and an email up to 150 words about a professional or academic topic

PO05. Perform calculations that involve two-step equations, ratios and proportions, exponents and polynomials

Study Plan and Courses

The following is a sample study plan indicating all English and math requirements. Students who test at a higher level may be exempt from some of the courses, thereby shortening the length of their individualized English and math study plan.

English Course Learning Outcomes

INDEPENDENT USER B1

FTEN1200
Read CEFR B1 level texts written in a variety of formats about less familiar topics up to 500 words, and complete activities to identify the main idea, changes of topic, details, facts, logic, purpose, and cues to meaning. 

Listen to simulated, authentic monologues or dialogues at the CEFR B1 level, up to four (4) minutes long, about a less familiar topic spoken at 140-160 words per minute, and complete activities to identify the main idea, changes of topic, details, facts, opinions, purpose and cues to meaning.

Speak at a CEFR B1 level on factual or less familiar topics when giving a four (4) minute presentation, answer up to two (2) follow-up questions, have an oral exchange of three (3) to five (5) minutes with at least eight to ten (8-10) turns each by doing interactional activities at the appropriate level, using clear pronunciation and accurate word stress.

Write a cause/effect paragraph and email at a CEFR B1 level up to 150 words about a professional or academic topic using complex sentences.

Demonstrate control of vocabulary at a CEFR B1 level by identifying and using accurate form, meaning and use.

Demonstrate control of grammar at a CEFR B1 level to support the communicative purpose.

 
INDEPENDENT USER B1

Read CEFR Mid B1 level texts written in a variety of formats about familiar and less familiar topics up to 400 words, and complete activities to identify the main idea, changes of topic, details, logic, purpose, and cues to meaning.

Listen to simulated, authentic monologues or dialogues at the CEFR Mid B1 level, up to three (3) and a half minutes long, about a less familiar topic spoken at 130-150 words per minute, and complete activities to identify the main idea, changes of topic, details, facts, opinions, purpose and cues to meaning.

Speak at a CEFR Mid B1 level on factual or less familiar topics when giving a three (3) minute presentation, answer up to two (2) follow-up questions, and have an oral exchange of three (3) to five (5) minutes with at least seven to nine (7-9) turns each by doing interactional activities at the appropriate level, using clear pronunciation and accurate word stress.

Write a paragraph and email at a CEFR Mid B1 level up to 175 words, to a prompt or question about a professional topic, and produce complex sentences.

Demonstrate control of vocabulary at a CEFR Mid B1 level by identifying and using accurate form, meaning and use.

Demonstrate control of grammar at a CEFR Mid B1 level to support the communicative purpose.

Listen to simulated, authentic monologues or dialogues at the CEFR High A2 level, up to three (3) minutes long, about a familiar and less familiar topic spoken at 120-140 words per minute, and complete activities to identify the main idea, changes of topic, details, activities, and cues to meaning.

Write a paragraph and email at a CEFR High A2 level up to 150 words to a prompt or question about a familiar and less familiar topic, and produce sentences linked with simple connectors.

Demonstrate control of vocabulary at a CEFR High A2 level by identifying and using accurate form, meaning and use.

Write a paragraph and personal email at a CEFR High A1 level up to 120 words to a prompt or question about a familiar topic, and produce sentences linked with simple connectors.

Demonstrate control of vocabulary at a CEFR High A1 level by identifying and using accurate form, meaning and use.

Grading Basis


Percentage marks are as awarded:

  • 60L is required to pass Technician Certificate Foundation English Courses.
  • 60L is required to pass Technician Certificate Foundation Math Courses.

Course Description

This course is designed for students with English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR Low A1. It uses an integrated approach to improve students’ reading skills and written communication skills in English. It focuses on routine and familiar contexts of language used with topics related to self, home, school, lifestyle, and work. Upon course completion, students will have English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR High A1. 

Co-requisite: FTEN1010

This communication course is designed for students with English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR Low A1. It aims to improve students’ speaking production, interaction, phonology, and vocabulary for effective real-world spoken communication. It focuses on routine, and familiar contexts of language used with everyday topics related to self, home, school, lifestyle, and work. Upon course completion, students will have English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR High A1. 

This course is for students with English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR Low A2. It uses an integrated approach and aims to improve students' reading skills and written communication skills in English. It focuses on familiar and less familiar contexts of language used with topics related to home, school, lifestyle, and work. Upon course completion, students will have English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR High A2. 

Co-requisite: FTEN1020

This communication course is for students with English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR Low A2. It aims to improve students’ speaking production, interaction, phonology, and vocabulary, for effective real-world spoken communication. It focuses on both familiar and less familiar contexts of language used, with everyday topics related to home, school, lifestyle, and work. Upon course completion, students will have English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR High A2.

This course is designed for students with English proficiency at the Basic User level of CEFR Low B1 and is taught using an integrated approach in order to improve students’ ability to communicate and interact in English. The course focuses on less familiar contexts of language use, and incorporates straightforward, concrete topics related to home, school, lifestyle, and work. Upon completion, students will have attained English proficiency at the Independent User level of CEFR Mid B1.

Pre-requisite: FTEN1100

This course is designed for students with English proficiency at Independent User level of CEFR Mid B1 using an integrated approach in order to improve students’ ability to communicate and interact in English. The course focuses on less familiar contexts of language use, and incorporates straightforward, concrete topics related to home, school, lifestyle, and work. Upon completion, students will have attained English proficiency at the Independent User level of CEFR B1. 

This course strengthens students’ mathematical skills relevant for workplace applications. Students learn about integers, roots, fractions, percent, decimals, metric and imperial measuring systems, and algebraic expressions. They also learn conversions for numbers and measurements and the fundamentals of equations. 

Pre-requisite: FTMA1100

This course strengthens students’ mathematical skills. Students learn about equations, ratio, proportion, exponents, polynomials, and factoring relevant for workplace applications. 

Future Pathways

Upon successful completion of their Technician Certificate Foundation Program courses students are eligible to enroll in UDST Technician Certificate Programs.
