VISITING FACULTY POLICY
1.0 Definitions
1.1 The following words and expressions have the meaning hereby assigned to them:
1.1.1 Faculty Members: Members of the teaching and/or research staff, whether on part- or full-time, holding the following ranks: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Senior Lecturer/Senior Technical Instructor, or Lecturer/Technical Instructor.
1.1.2 University: University of Doha for Science and Technology established by Emiri Decision No. 13 of 2022.
1.1.3 Visiting Faculty: An individual engaged at the rank of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, in a recognized university/institution, and often on leave from his/her functions, engaged by the University on a temporary full-time basis for up to one academic year.
1.2 Where a word or phrase is given a particular meaning, other parts of speech and grammatical forms of that word or phrase have corresponding meanings.
1.3 Where the context requires, words importing the singular shall include the plural and vice-versa.
2.0 Policy Purpose
2.1 The purpose of this Visiting Faculty Policy (this “Policy”) is to establish principles for the appointment of Visiting Faculty members within the University.
3.0 Policy Scope
3.1 This Policy applies to all existing and future Visiting Faculty members at the University.
4.0 Policy Statements
4.1 Nature of Engagement
Visiting Faculty members are not employees of the University, but contracted either independently, or through the mutual agreement of the University and their sponsoring institutions, however, and subject to exceptions stated herein or in their contract, some University policies will apply to them during their engagement with the University, as if they were Faculty Members.
4.2 Purpose of Engagement and Selection
4.2.1 The University will engage Visiting Faculty to add diverse perspectives and specialized expertise to its programs, foster innovative collaborations, and enhance the overall quality of teaching and scholarship within the University. Additionally, Visiting Faculty may help the University develop new research directions, build connections with other institutions and experts in their fields, which can enhance the University’s reputation and contribute to its academic network.
4.2.2 The criteria for selecting Visiting Faculty members are defined in the Visiting Academics Procedure (PR-AC-35).
4.3 Review and Appointment Process
4.3.1 The appointment of the Visiting Faculty is approved by the President, upon the recommendation of the Vice-President, Academics, per the relevant procedure, following completion of background checks.
4.3.2 Visiting Faculty will be ranked per the University’s applicable policies and procedures, and conferred with one of the following titles: Visiting Professor, Visiting Associate Professor, or Visiting Assistant Professor.
4.3.3 The University will only sponsor the Visiting Faculty. Sponsorship of the Visiting Faculty’s family members is at the sole responsibility and cost of the Visiting Faculty.
5.0 Engagement Terms and Conditions
5.1 Visiting Faculty will:
5.1.1 Be engaged on a full-time basis for up to one year, upon the approval of the Vice-President, Academics;
5.1.2 Not be subject to a probation period;
5.1.3 Not be entitled to paid annual leave;
5.1.4 Not be subject to academic appraisal or performance review processes;
5.1.5 Be entitled to payment of a monthly remuneration starting from his/her actual date of engagement, unless they receive the same from their sponsoring institution, or the agreement with the sponsoring institution states otherwise. The remuneration is determined per the academic salary scale, taking into consideration the Visiting Faculty’s qualifications, rank, and experience;
5.1.6 Not be entitled to any other benefits or allowances granted to the University’s employees. However, in case of Visiting Faculty engaged from outside Qatar, they will be entitled to the following benefits, unless they receive the same from their sponsoring institution, or the agreement with the sponsoring institution states otherwise:
5.1.6.1 Accommodation;
5.1.6.2 Local medical insurance;
5.1.6.3 Transportation allowance;
5.1.6.4 Airfare ticket on economy class, for coming to the State of Qatar, and, subject to full completion of their contract term, a return airfare ticket to their country of origin;
5.1.7 Be eligible for one (1) paid sick or compelling personal need leave day for every thirty (30) calendar days, on assurance from the department that they will not interfere with the staffing of its curricular obligations.
5.2 Terms and conditions for the appointment of Visiting Faculty will be further detailed in their contract of engagement.
6.0 Termination
6.1 Visiting Faculty’s engagement will terminate:
6.1.1 at its expiry date;
6.1.2 following disciplinary action;
6.1.3 for breach;
6.1.4 by mutual agreement;
6.1.5 termination of the mutual agreement for the exchange or delegation of the Visiting Faculty between the University and the Visiting Faculty’s sponsor.
7.0 Resources
7.1 Visiting Faculty will be given access to the University’s resources, which are necessary for conducting their academic duties. The extent of the resources offered to a Visiting Faculty Member is at the discretion of the Vice-President, Academics.
8.0 Procedures
8.1 The Vice-President, Academics will ensure that procedures are developed for the implementation of this Policy.
