1.0 Definitions
1.1 The following words and expressions shall have the meaning hereby assigned to them:
1.1.1 Academic Management: Academic Members assigned administrative duties of a: President, Vice President, Associate Vice President, Academic Manager, Director, Dean, Associate/Assistant Dean, Department Head, Program Head and other Heads (as applicable).
1.1.2 Academic Members: Faculty Members and Instructional Members.
1.1.3 Academic Research Members: University employees devoted primarily to Research, whether on part-time or full-time basis, holding the following position titles: Post-Doctoral Researcher (Post-Doc), Research Associate, or Research Assistants.
1.1.4 Alumni: Graduates of the University.

1.1.13.5 designs;
1.1.13.6 plant varieties;
1.1.13.7 trade secrets;
1.1.13.8 know-how and data;
1.1.13.9 patents;
1.1.13.10 copyrightable work;
1.1.13.11 trademarks and research data;
1.1.13.12 tangible research property;
1.1.13.13 applications for IP rights;
1.1.13.14 intellectual assets such as discoveries and expertise;

3.0 Policy Scope
3.1 This policy applies to:

3.1.2 Academic Research Members,
3.1.3 Staff,
3.1.4 Students,
3.1.5 Eligible Alumni,
3.1.6 External parties or sponsors.
4.0 Policy Statement
4.1 The University supports Research Projects to the highest standards.
4.2 The University strives to advance knowledge and solve challenges.
4.3 All Research Activities must comply with applicable policies.
4.4 ARIED is responsible for funding management.
4.5 ARIED will identify funding opportunities.
4.6 The LPI must ensure compliance.
4.7 The LPI shall transfer Research Projects if required.
4.8 Academic Members may apply for Teaching Release Time.
4.9 Research must adhere to Intellectual Property Policy.
4.10 No Research begins before contract execution.
4.11 Funded Research Activities
4.11.1 Research must follow contracts and policies.
4.11.2 Participants must declare affiliation.
4.11.3 Activities must maintain integrity.
4.11.4 Activities must be free of conflicts.
4.11.5 Internal Funding for Research
4.11.5.1 Supports research activities.
4.11.5.2 Subject to budget and criteria.
4.11.6 External Research Funding
4.11.6.1 Subject to contract terms.
4.11.6.2 Executed by ARIED.
4.11.7 Co-funded Research Activities
4.11.7.1 Must follow both internal and external rules.
4.12 Monitoring, Evaluation & Quality Assurance
4.12.1 Activities must be monitored by ARIED.
4.12.2 ARIED evaluates funding programs.
4.12.3 ARIED ensures quality assurance.
4.12.4 Compliance with policies and legislation.
4.13 Compliance and Research Ethics
4.13.1 Must comply with ethics policies.
4.13.2 IRB approval required where applicable.
4.14 Reporting
4.14.1 ARIED maintains reports.
5.0 Procedures
5.1 The Vice-President will ensure procedures are implemented.
